So far my experience is that these people have some really nice employees, however that aside they are non-communicative, and leave a big mess and break things. I was told to move certain things in my home so they could do work there, I moved said items and they did not get to it before their work day was over. That was fine I asked when they would be back and was told the next day, so I left all the stuff in both closets out in the middle of my floor, taking them at their word that they would fix the thing they had broken and be back to finish their work the next day. Neither of these things have come to pass and it has been about a week now with no word on when they will return and finish a job they were hired by the city to do. Is this a inconvenience? YES! IS THIS IRRESPONSIBLE? YES! IS IT DISRESPECTFUL? YES! MOST OF ALL IT IS A HORRIBLE EXAMPLE OF PROFESSIONALISM IN OUR SERVICE ORIENTED WORLD.
The real distinguishing feature between good and so-so companies is how they handle the unexpected. In the spring of 2011 I interviewed some 2 dozen insulation companies. I asked for bids from two... one blowing in from the interior, one from the exterior. Richart Family was the only “exterior” company that would take off both the aluminum siding AND the 4" wood clad beneath it. (The idea was to preserve the wood siding beneath the aluminum.) Out of 2 dozen interviews, most would not take off the wood, insisting instead on drilling through the siding. If pushed, they jacked the price up to discourage the job.
Richart was a very competitive bid, given the extra work of the wood siding. To remove the wood siding, they had to use a sawzall to cut the old square nails holding the wood on. This is an old house, with bump-outs, corners, etc. all over the place. It was a much tougher job than they thought it would be. The guys hung in there, day after day, working 20 feet up for much of it, and kept a good cheer. Finally they were done. Energy Trust came and inspected with a camera. They had never seen such good work in terms of hitting all of the weird X-bays over windows, etc.
Alas, we missed half-a-dozen bays around an exterior chimney. Today they came back to do them. Because of the chimney, they have no choice but to go in from the inside. They just left and the place is spotless. The bays are filled. And they had not a SINGLE word of grumpiness! They are just a great company to work with. Anyone can make a mistake, but it is how you deal with it that separates the good from the so-so. I would recommend them to anyone for insulating your home.
